10 rules to live by when styling your baby bump.

As I’m getting ready to say goodbye to my bump, I’m in such a reminiscing mood over all the outfits I got to wear and how I chose to style the bump. I remember that one of the main things I was most excited about during my pregnancy was how my style would change and evolve with my growing bump. I always thought I would want to emphasize the bump every chance I got but that wasn’t the case at all with me. Don’t get me wrong, I loved putting my bump on display on certain days but other days I would just want to wear the biggest baggiest clothes. With that mentality, it was super hard to stay stylish and fashionable throughout my pregnancy without looking frumpy. It might be silly to be thinking about how I look and what I’m wearing while growing a human inside me, but it was one of the small things I felt like I could control when I was overwhelmed with all the changes going on in my life and body.

I also had the hardest time finding cute maternity clothes anywhere! I actually ended up buying only four pieces of actual maternity clothing. I got two pairs of maternity jeans because they were definitely necessary when I wanted to “dress up” from leggings and joggers and two cute maternity shirts that I happened to find. The rest of my wardrobe during pregnancy consisted of sizing up on regular clothes and that seemed to work best for me. I didn’t have a cute showing bump until the weather got a little chillier here so I couldn’t go with the easiest route of cute summer dresses that seamlessly show off the bump. I really had to try and think about what I wanted to wear everyday and how I wanted to style my outfits. I came up with a couple of rules for myself to go by during this special time with my bump.

  1. The cropped look doesn’t go well with the bump at all! It either has to a longer shirt/sweater or tucked in to really emphasize the bump.
  2. If you’re planning on wearing maternity jeans, make sure it’s paired with a long enough top that doesn’t show the stretchy band part of the pants.
  3. Babydoll dresses are your best friend!! I sized up a couple sizes to make sure they would be long enough. Remember, the bump compromises a lot of the dress length.
  4. Personally, I didn’t think maternity leggings were necessary. My regular leggings stretched with me and were incredibly comfortable throughout the pregnancy. I can’t recommend them enough!
  5. You can never go wrong with bodycon dresses to really highlight the bump but if you want to add a little more style to the look, add a duster cardigan to feel nice and airy over the tight dress as well as make the look more interesting.
  6. I found myself repeating this look a lot. A simple tank tucked into joggers or wide leg pants (the comfier, the better) with an oversized blazer or shacket over it to finish the look.
  7. Joggers were definitely a repeat during this time. They’re both comfortable and stylish. I sized up one size and they lasted the whole pregnancy.
  8. Oversized sweaters and pullovers with leggings always looked good before and the bump certainly doesn’t change that fact!
  9. I couldn’t repeat this look a lot because it got too cold here and my bump was a late bloomer but I loved when I got to wear maxi boho dresses that flowed easily over the bump and made me feel super beautiful and put together.
  10. Remember, your body is going through so many changes right now so the most important thing is to dress in whatever makes you feel your best!

I included a few outfit pics below to hopefully inspire anyone out there who wants to look and feel their best during such a special time in their lives and to remind anyone that it’s okay to care about the small things in life when there are such big things happening at the same time! I also linked a couple keys pieces I found myself wearing more than others these past couple of months!
